One
of the Biggest Challenges I feel is worrying
about Nicholas'
future. I think all parents worry about their children's future,
but when your child has autism, its even more difficult. You want
a crystal ball to just see if they will be able to speak if they
are not verbal now, will they make friends, will people notice
they are different, will they work, will they get married and
or have a family...what will happen when I am gone...will they
be cared for and loved as much as they are now...will they be
happy.
One
of the Greatest Blessings for me is truly appreciating
every little thing he accomplishes. Again, all parents are excited
when their child says their first word, but for a parent with
autism its like winning the lottery! The first time Nicholas associated
a word correctly I almost burst into tears...he watched a tv show
that had a picture of the ocean and looked at me and said "wadder!"
he was 3. I couldn't believe it and told my friend who were with
us there with neuro-typical children and I noticed they didn't
realize how huge that was...you'd have to be a parent of an autistic
child to really know how wonderful that was. ... |
